Shillong, Meghalaya – In a significant move towards fostering inclusive and responsive governance, Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has urged for a more channelled and region-specific policy input through the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). Her call, made during a vital stakeholder interaction in Shillong, underscores a proactive commitment to accelerate Northeast Region Development by ensuring policies are meticulously tailored to the unique challenges and vast opportunities present in the region.

The interactive session, meticulously organized by the Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with key financial departments including the Department of Financial Services (DFS), Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC), and Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), served as a pivotal platform. Minister Sitharaman engaged directly with a diverse group of participants, including dynamic business leaders, innovative entrepreneurs, seasoned industry representatives, and engaged citizens. The deliberations focused intently on dissecting the pressing regional challenges that impede growth and identifying the myriad opportunities that, if harnessed effectively, could catalyze unprecedented Northeast Region Development.

A highlight of the session was the Minister’s felicitation of two of Meghalaya’s top women taxpayers, Rimiful Shylla and Wanjoplin. This recognition not only celebrated their exemplary contributions to the nation’s tax system but also underscored the burgeoning potential and active participation of the local populace in national economic growth. Participants also advocated for the inclusion of more local industries under the Targeted Champion Sector Scheme, aiming to provide them with the necessary boost to compete at a national level.

Furthermore, significant concerns were raised regarding the high logistics costs, a persistent challenge attributed to the region’s difficult and diverse terrain. This led to a compelling call for rationalized transport subsidies, which could significantly reduce operational expenses for businesses and improve the competitiveness of regional products. The discussions highlighted the need for greater market access and enhanced credit facilities for startups and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that are deeply rooted in the Northeast.
