Crackdown on Illegal Private Tuition in Tripura: 12 Government Teachers Under Fire
Crackdown on Illegal Private Tuition in Tripura Exposes Widespread Violations
In a strong move against illegal private tuition in Tripura, authorities have summoned 12 government teachers from various schools in the Belonia subdivision of South Tripura. The action follows formal complaints lodged by unemployed home tutors and concerned citizens of the Rajnagar block, accusing the teachers of violating the standing directive prohibiting government educators from conducting private tuition.
12 Teachers Summoned Amid Growing Public Anger
According to officials, show cause notices were issued to 12 teachers from prominent schools including Sonapur Class XII School, Barpathari Class XII School, Haripur SB School, Manpathar Secondary School, Azgar Rahmanpur Higher Secondary School, Nasirnagar Higher Secondary School, and Bagan Bari Higher Secondary School. These educators were summoned by the School Inspectorate office in Belonia for allegedly participating in illegal private tuition in Tripura.
Out of the 12, eleven teachers appeared at the office and signed a written pledge denying any involvement in private coaching. One teacher, however, remained absent and is currently being investigated further. Sources close to the education department suggest that sufficient evidence has been gathered implicating all 12 teachers.
Official Response and Committee Investigation
A senior official from the School Inspectorate confirmed the ongoing investigation. “We have received credible reports of government teachers conducting illegal private tuition in Tripura. Our district-level and subdivision-level monitoring committees are actively looking into the matter,” the official stated.
Despite their written denial, several of the summoned teachers acknowledged that many of their colleagues continue to flout the rules and engage in paid coaching, often during official school hours.
Violation of Department Orders and Ethical Concerns
The state’s education department has long prohibited government teachers from conducting private tuition, a rule aimed at ensuring commitment to public education and protecting opportunities for unemployed tutors. However, the enforcement of this policy has been lackluster. Locals allege that teachers mark their attendance in schools and then leave to run tuition sessions either at home or in coaching centers.
“This is a betrayal of public trust,” said an unemployed home tutor. “Illegal private tuition in Tripura is destroying our livelihood and degrading the quality of education in government schools.”
Public Frustration Mounts Over Inaction
Citizens in the Rajnagar block have voiced strong disapproval over the continued lack of enforcement. “Despite multiple complaints, the School Education Department has remained largely inactive. This negligence allows the unethical practice of illegal private tuition in Tripura to flourish,” said a resident.
Others point out that the students suffer the most. “Teachers are saving their energy for private coaching where they earn money, rather than focusing on the classroom. It’s the children who pay the price,” another local commented.
Pledge Signed, But Doubts Remain
While the signing of pledges by the teachers may appear to be a step toward resolution, locals remain skeptical. “Signing a paper doesn’t change the fact that many are still giving tuition secretly. We need strict monitoring and penalties for violators,” urged a retired school principal.
The Way Forward for Education in Tripura
The current scandal surrounding illegal private tuition in Tripura underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms and strict oversight. The education department must not only act on this immediate case but also establish mechanisms to prevent future violations.
Stronger implementation of existing rules, community reporting mechanisms, and periodic audits can play a crucial role in restoring the credibility of government schools in the region.
As investigations continue, the people of Tripura wait to see if this latest crackdown will finally put an end to the shadow education economy that has plagued the state’s public education system for years.
