Heavy Rains Disrupt Normal Life in Tripura; Howrah River Water Level Rising Amid Widespread Downpour
Agartala, May 30, 2025: Continuous heavy rains over the past 48 hours have disrupted daily life across Tripura, with the rising water level of the Howrah river triggering panic among local residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported widespread rainfall across all districts, with several areas recording alarmingly high figures.
According to the IMD, the highest rainfall was recorded in Bishramganj of Sepahijla district at 211 mm, while the lowest was 33 mm in Gandachhara, Dhalai district. In the capital Agartala, 121.6 mm of rainfall was recorded.
The rainfall data reported across districts paints a grim picture- West Tripura: Bodhjungnagar received 107 mm, DM Office 82 mm, AD Nagar 136 mm, Jirania 158 mm, Secretariat 76.5 mm and Howrah area 115 mm; Sepahijala District: Sonamura saw 167 mm, Bishalgarh 88 mm, Gajaria 109 mm, and Mohanbhog in Sonamura 204 mm; Khowai: Recorded 122 mm, while Teliamura received 112 mm; Gomati District: Amarpur saw 92.2 mm, and Karbook 71.6 mm; South Tripura: Belonia received 88 mm, Sabroom 109.4 mm, and Bogafa 86.5 mm; North Tripura: Panisagar recorded 67.8 mm, Kanchanpur 46.4 mm, Kadamtala 66.5 mm, and Natunbazar 138 mm; Unakoti District: Kumarghat saw 78.2 mm, and Kailashahar 84.5 mm; Dhalai District: Chawmanu received 44.7 mm, Kamalpur 70.6 mm, and Manughat 67.4 mm.
“The persistent rainfall over the past two days is a result of active monsoon conditions over the region. The water level of the Howrah river is rising gradually, and citizens in low-lying areas are advised to stay alert,” said an official from the Meteorological Department.
Despite the heavy rains, temperatures remained within seasonal norms. On Thursday, the maximum temperature in the state was 32°C, while the minimum stood at 23°C.
Authorities are on high alert, and disaster management teams have been asked to remain prepared in case of flooding or evacuation needs.
