India’s Remarkable Rise as Leading Digital Economy under PM Modi: Amit Shah
In a strong endorsement of India’s digital transformation journey, Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the country’s remarkable rise as a leading digital economy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing a gathering in New Delhi, Shah attributed the exponential growth in digital infrastructure, services, and innovation to the visionary leadership of PM Modi over the last decade.
Leading Digital Economy Becoming India’s Identity
Highlighting India’s evolution in the digital sphere, Shah remarked that India’s emergence as a leading digital economy is now globally recognized. “In just ten years, India has transformed from a digitally deprived nation to a digital powerhouse,” Shah said. He emphasized that under PM Modi’s governance, technology has been democratized and made accessible to the masses.
From digital banking and e-governance to online education and healthcare access, the Modi government’s policies have integrated digital solutions into the daily lives of citizens. This has not only streamlined public services but also fostered transparency and efficiency across administrative systems.
The Role of Government Reforms in Building a Leading Digital Economy
Shah elaborated on several key reforms and initiatives that have fueled this transformation. The rollout of Digital India in 2015 served as a major catalyst. The campaign aimed to empower citizens digitally and bridge the urban-rural digital divide.
Initiatives such as Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar integration, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and the BharatNet project have laid the foundation for India’s digital ecosystem. These reforms, according to Shah, were instrumental in making India a leading digital economy that’s inclusive and scalable.
He also pointed to India’s digital payment success, which now surpasses even developed countries. With UPI transactions touching new records each month, India has firmly cemented its status as a global digital finance leader.
Empowering the Youth and Startups in the Leading Digital Economy
Amit Shah highlighted the entrepreneurial revolution sparked by digital policies. India’s startup ecosystem—ranked among the top three globally—owes much of its rise to the government’s digital-first approach. “PM Modi’s vision for a leading digital economy is not just about government services—it’s about creating a new generation of innovators and job creators,” he noted.
With simplified compliance rules, startup-friendly incentives, and improved digital infrastructure, young entrepreneurs are driving innovation across sectors, from agriculture to education and from health tech to logistics.
Digital Economy as a Catalyst for Rural Growth
In rural India, the digital revolution is more than just a convenience—it’s a game-changer. Access to digital resources has opened up opportunities for remote work, e-commerce, digital learning, and telemedicine. Shah stressed that making India a leading digital economy also means ensuring that technology reaches the last mile.
He highlighted the success of Common Service Centres (CSCs), which now act as digital service points in over six lakh villages. These centres have enabled rural citizens to access government services, banking, and digital literacy training close to home.
Global Recognition and the Road Ahead
The Home Minister also noted that global organizations and forums have started acknowledging India’s progress. From hosting the G20 Digital Economy Ministers’ Meeting to being consulted by countries seeking to replicate India’s UPI model, India’s digital leadership is gaining global admiration.
“India’s position as a leading digital economy is no longer aspirational—it’s a reality,” Shah asserted. “But we are not stopping here. The next goal is to make digital services more intelligent, more AI-driven, and accessible in all regional languages.”
He added that the government’s focus will remain on 5G expansion, digital skilling, cybersecurity, and AI integration to keep India at the forefront of the global digital race.
