Guwahati, May 31: In a significant development for air travel in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that IndiGo Airlines will commence a non-stop flight to Jorhat from New Delhi starting mid-September 2025. The announcement came following a high-level meeting between the Chief Minister and senior leadership of IndiGo in New Delhi.

This move is part of a larger plan to enhance air connectivity in the region and cater to the growing demand for direct flights to Upper Assam.

New Direct Route Set to Transform Travel in Assam

The new non-stop flight to Jorhat is expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease connectivity between New Delhi and Jorhat — a major gateway to Upper Assam and Nagaland. Currently, passengers traveling to Jorhat often have to rely on connecting flights or lengthy road journeys from Guwahati, making the trip time-consuming.

“With the launch of this non-stop flight to Jorhat, we are taking another step towards improving air infrastructure in Assam,” said Chief Minister Sarma. “This is not just about convenience; it is about unlocking economic and tourism potential for the region.”

IndiGo Responds to Demand for Better Connectivity

According to officials, the new route was proposed in response to increasing demand from both business and leisure travelers. IndiGo Airlines, known for its expansive domestic network, aims to support regional growth by improving accessibility to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

The airline’s decision to introduce a non-stop flight to Jorhat aligns with its strategy to connect underserved regions with the national capital and major urban hubs.

Strategic Vision for Air Travel in Assam

Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the importance of strategic planning in developing Assam’s aviation landscape. “We are working closely with airlines like IndiGo to ensure that cities such as Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Silchar, and others receive the connectivity they deserve. This new non-stop flight to Jorhat is the beginning of several such initiatives,” he said.

Sarma also highlighted the state government’s efforts to upgrade airport infrastructure and provide incentives to airlines willing to operate new routes in the region.

Economic and Tourism Impact

Industry experts believe that the non-stop flight to Jorhat will have a positive ripple effect on the local economy. Jorhat, often referred to as the cultural capital of Assam, is home to historical landmarks, tea estates, and educational institutions such as the Assam Agricultural University.

“Tourism, tea exports, and academic exchanges will benefit tremendously from this improved air link,” said a senior official from Assam Tourism. “This will also encourage more investments in the region, as direct connectivity plays a key role in regional development.”

Passenger Expectations and Service Details

While exact schedules and ticket pricing are expected to be released closer to the launch date, IndiGo has assured that the non-stop flight to Jorhat will be competitively priced and timed for maximum convenience to both business and leisure travelers.

Frequent flyers and local residents have welcomed the move. “For people like us who have to travel frequently to Delhi for work or medical purposes, this direct flight is a huge relief,” said Anirban Dutta, a resident of Jorhat.

Looking Ahead

The launch of this non-stop flight to Jorhat is seen as a milestone in Assam’s journey toward better connectivity and infrastructure. With the government and private sector working in tandem, the state is poised to become a major hub in India’s aviation map.

As preparations begin for the mid-September launch, expectations are high that more such announcements will follow, bringing the rest of Assam closer to national and international destinations.
