Jairam Ramesh Slams Trump’s Airstrikes on Iran, Terms It a ‘Diplomatic Mockery’

Trump's airstrikes on Iran

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh has come out strongly against Trump’s airstrikes on Iran, calling them a “mockery of diplomacy” and a dangerous move that could escalate an already volatile situation in the Middle East. His remarks come amid growing international condemnation and concern over the former US President’s aggressive military approach to international disputes.

Trump’s Airstrikes on Iran Called “Unprovoked and Reckless”

In a press briefing on Sunday, Jairam Ramesh did not mince words, stating that Trump’s airstrikes on Iran were a “reckless and unnecessary provocation” that flies in the face of diplomatic principles. He criticized the former US President’s ongoing obsession with militarized responses and said, “You cannot claim to stand for peace and democracy while firing missiles at sovereign nations.”

Ramesh added that the airstrikes reflect the failure of Trump’s self-proclaimed strategy of “maximum pressure” and warned that such unilateral actions only deepen global insecurity.

India’s Response to Trump’s Airstrikes on Iran

While the Indian government has remained officially neutral on the incident, political voices from the opposition have become increasingly vocal. Ramesh’s criticism follows a wave of reactions from other global leaders, many of whom have also labeled Trump’s airstrikes on Iran as disproportionate and politically motivated.

Ramesh emphasized that such actions pose direct risks to India’s energy security, given the critical role Iran plays as an oil supplier and geopolitical player in the region. “India cannot afford to be silent when global peace is at stake,” he asserted.

Diplomatic Mockery or Strategic Necessity?

Supporters of the Trump administration argue that the airstrikes were necessary to counter Iranian threats, citing intelligence reports and alleged military build-ups. However, critics like Jairam Ramesh argue that Trump’s airstrikes on Iran were nothing more than a display of brute force aimed at reviving his political relevance amid domestic distractions.

“This is not diplomacy. This is a desperate attempt to assert dominance, and in doing so, it endangers lives on all sides,” Ramesh said, urging the global community to speak out before the situation spirals out of control.

What It Means for US-Iran Relations

The airstrikes have significantly worsened an already tense relationship between Washington and Tehran. Iran has vowed to retaliate, escalating fears of a potential full-scale conflict. Ramesh warned that this cycle of provocation and retaliation can never lead to peace.

He added that Trump’s airstrikes on Iran undermine years of multilateral efforts aimed at normalizing relations with Tehran. “The nuclear deal was torn apart, sanctions were imposed, and now this. What’s next? A war?” Ramesh questioned.

Global Peace Needs Dialogue, Not Drones

In his closing remarks, Ramesh urged international institutions including the United Nations to take a firm stand against unprovoked military actions. He stressed that nations like India must lead with diplomacy and uphold principles of peaceful coexistence.

He also appealed to Indian civil society and diaspora to stay informed and speak out against military aggression disguised as foreign policy. “We must remember that diplomacy is not weakness; it is our only shield against global chaos,” he said.

A Message for Indian Citizens

Jairam Ramesh’s remarks reflect a growing sense of concern among Indian political thinkers about the global shift toward aggressive nationalism and unilateralism. He called on Indian youth to understand international issues beyond headlines and urged educational institutions to invest in foreign policy awareness.

“Let us not be silent spectators,” Ramesh concluded, “because when diplomacy dies, the world bleeds.”
