Naxal Commander Neutralization

Jharkhand: Decisive Victory in Bokaro Naxal Encounter as Commander Neutralized

In a significant stride against left-wing extremism, security forces operating in Jharkhand achieved a decisive victory this morning, July 16, 2025. A sub-zonal Naxal commander, identified as Kunwar Manjhi, also known by his aliases Sahdeo Manjhi and Sade, was gunned down in a fierce Bokaro Naxal encounter. The operation, a testament to the unwavering resolve of India’s security apparatus, underscores the intensified efforts to rid the region of Naxal influence.

Details of the Bokaro Naxal Encounter

The early morning operation, which commenced around 5:30 AM to 6:30 AM, saw a joint contingent of District Police, the elite CoBRA battalion, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) meticulously comb the dense forest areas of Bokaro district. Intelligence inputs had indicated the presence of Naxal elements in the Kashitand forest of Lugu hills, under the Jageshwar Bihar police station area, and the Birhordera forest in the Gomia police station area, prompting the swift and coordinated response.

During the exchange of fire, which lasted for a considerable period, security personnel engaged with the Naxal cadres. The relentless assault by the forces resulted in the neutralization of Kunwar Manjhi, a high-value target who carried a bounty of Rupees 25 lakhs on his head. His elimination marks a critical blow to the Naxalite network in the region, disrupting their operational capabilities and leadership structure. Following the cessation of hostilities, an AK-47 rifle was recovered from the encounter site, further confirming the intensity of the confrontation.

Brave Sacrifice in the Bokaro Naxal Encounter

While the operation achieved its primary objective, it was not without sacrifice. CRPF Constable Praneswar Koch of the 209 CoBRA unit sustained a bullet injury during the intense gunfight. Despite immediate efforts to provide medical attention, the brave jawan tragically succumbed to his injuries. His sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by security personnel daily in their commitment to national security and peace. The nation salutes his valor and unwavering dedication.

Broader Context of Anti-Naxal Operations

The successful Bokaro Naxal encounter is part of a larger, intensified anti-Naxal drive sweeping across Jharkhand and neighboring states. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to making Jharkhand free from Maoist influence by the end of this year. This resolve is further bolstered by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s ambitious target to eliminate Naxalism from the entire country by March 31, 2026.

Recent developments across Naxal-affected regions indicate growing pressure on these extremist groups:

  • Surrender and Disarmament: Just recently, 23 Naxalites, carrying a cumulative bounty of Rs 1.18 crore, surrendered in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh. This group included 14 men and nine women, all identified as hardcore Naxalites, choosing to lay down arms and join the mainstream.
  • Ongoing Challenges: Despite these successes, the threat remains. Incidents like the IED bomb planted by Maoists on July 8, which caused injuries to two CRPF jawans in Chhattisgarh’s Timapur-Murdanda road, highlight the continued need for vigilance and robust operations.

The sustained efforts by security forces, marked by intelligence-led operations and tactical superiority, are gradually dismantling the Naxal strongholds. The strategic focus on key leadership targets, combined with initiatives encouraging surrenders, reflects a multi-pronged approach aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in these regions. The Bokaro Naxal encounter stands as a testament to the dedication and bravery of the men and women on the front lines of this critical fight.
