Kamal Haasan Embarks on New Legislative Journey as Rajya Sabha MP

Delhi, India – In a momentous event today, renowned actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan officially took his oath as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. This significant milestone marks his inaugural entry into a national legislative role, heralding a new chapter in his already illustrious career, now firmly rooted in the political arena.

The Journey to Kamal Haasan Rajya Sabha Seat

  • A Strategic Alliance: Kamal Haasan’s nomination to the Upper House was a direct result of a strategic alliance with the ruling DMK-led coalition. This partnership was forged ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the DMK had pledged a Rajya Sabha seat in exchange for MNM’s crucial support.
  • Nomination and Filing: The formal process commenced on June 6, when Kamal Haasan filed his nomination papers at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat. This event was graced by the presence of key political figures, including Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, and various allies from the DMK bloc, such as VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, MDMK’s Vaiko, and Tamil Nadu Congress chief Selvaperunthagai.
  • Comfortable Majority: In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, securing a Rajya Sabha seat necessitates a minimum of 34 votes. The DMK-led INDIA bloc, boasting a formidable 158 MLAs (DMK-133, Congress-17, VCK-4, CPI-2, CPM-2), was strategically positioned to comfortably secure four seats in the Upper House. This strong mandate underscored the alliance’s political strength and unity.
  • Unopposed Election: On June 12, Kamal Haasan, along with five other candidates, was officially elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu. This unanimous election solidified his position and marked a smooth transition into his new legislative responsibilities. The election certificates were presented by Returning Officer Subramani at the Chennai Secretariat, with Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and other MPs in attendance.

Kamal Haasan’s Vision for His New Role

  • Duty and Honour: Speaking moments before the ceremony, Kamal Haasan expressed his commitment, stating, “I am going to take the oath and register my name in Delhi today. I am going to fulfil this duty with honour given to me as an Indian.” This statement reflects his dedication to serving the nation and upholding the responsibilities associated with his new parliamentary role.
  • National Platform: His entry into the Rajya Sabha provides a national platform for Kamal Haasan to articulate his vision and contribute to policy-making at a broader level. This move is expected to bring his unique perspective and advocacy for various causes to the forefront of national discourse.

Political Landscape and MNM’s Role

  • Strategic Support in 2024: It is noteworthy that MNM chose not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls independently, instead offering its full support to the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu. This decision highlights a pragmatic approach to political engagement, prioritizing strategic alliances for broader impact.
  • Past Electoral Performance: In the 2021 Assembly elections, MNM had secured a vote share of 2.62 percent. While not a dominant force independently, its influence and Kamal Haasan’s charismatic appeal have made it a valuable ally in the complex political landscape of Tamil Nadu.

The Other Elected MPs from Tamil Nadu

Alongside Kamal Haasan, five other individuals were also elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu, further strengthening the state’s representation in the Upper House:

  • DMK’s Representatives:
    • Poet Salma (A Rokkaiah Malik)
    • SR Sivalingam
    • P Wilson (commencing his second term)
  • AIADMK’s Representatives:
    • IS Inbadurai
    • Dhanapal

This collective induction of diverse political figures from Tamil Nadu into the Rajya Sabha underscores the dynamic and multifaceted nature of Indian parliamentary representation.
