Manipur: Kakching Municipal Council Launches Cleanliness Drive To Mark World Environment Day, Targets Plastic Waste On NH-137A
In observance of World Environment Day 2025, the Kakching Municipal Council (KMC) conducted a major cleanliness drive today under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.” The initiative focused on clearing plastic waste along the Burma-Sungu Road and National Highway 137-A in Kakching district.
The week-long observance, which began on June 1, will conclude tomorrow on World Environment Day. As part of the campaign, KMC targeted roadside drains choked with plastic waste, a common cause of flooding in the area during the rainy season.
Naorem Shanjitkumar, Caretaker Chairperson of KMC, highlighted the importance of proper waste disposal and public cooperation. While the council collects waste twice a week, many residents still dump trash into drains and water bodies, he said, warning that such practices lead to man-made disasters.
He urged residents, shopkeepers, and businesses to subscribe to the waste collection service, adding that by the end of June, the names of those not availing the service would be made public.
“If everyone uses the municipal waste system, there will be no need to pollute our drains. Clogged drains cause flooding and environmental harm that could easily be avoided,” he stated.
The cleanliness drive was joined by Senior CEO Th. Siddhartha Singh, municipal councillors, sanitary workers, and KMC staff. The council also appealed to the public to refrain from throwing plastic bottles, bags, and other waste into drains to help prevent seasonal flooding.
