Agartala, Tripura: In an inspiring medical success story, a critically ill infant battling acute kidney injury has made a full recovery at GB Pant Hospital, Agartala, thanks to the timely and expert intervention by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals.

Seven-month-old Adrija Debnath, the daughter of Abhijit Debnath, was first admitted to the Pediatric Department of Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital on May 13. She was suffering from a week-long high fever and bloody diarrhea—symptoms that quickly escalated to a life-threatening condition. Her story now stands as a testament to the hospital’s ability to manage complex pediatric emergencies involving a critically ill infant.

Critically Ill Infant Diagnosed with Rare Kidney Disorder

Upon admission, Adrija showed minimal urine output, facial swelling, extreme fatigue, and refusal to feed. Further medical evaluation revealed alarmingly high levels of urea (150 mg/dL) and creatinine (2.1 mg/dL), along with severe anemia (hemoglobin at 6 g/dL) and a dangerously low platelet count. The clinical team diagnosed her with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)—a rare but severe condition that can lead to acute kidney failure in young children.

Despite intensive monitoring in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICO), her condition deteriorated further, leading to complete kidney shutdown. With her life hanging by a thread, doctors recommended emergency peritoneal dialysis.

Family’s Return from Kolkata Saves Critically Ill Infant

Initially, the family planned to shift the critically ill infant to a private hospital in Kolkata. However, the exorbitant treatment cost—estimated at Rs 70,000 per night and a total of Rs 15 lakh—proved too much for the lower-middle-class family. With limited financial resources, they made the crucial decision to return to GB Pant Hospital on May 19.

When readmitted, Adrija’s condition had significantly worsened. Her urea had spiked to 295 mg/dL, creatinine rose to 6.3 mg/dL, and her hemoglobin dropped to a critically low 3.5 g/dL. Recognizing the severity of the case, the hospital team, led by Associate Professor Dr. Srivas Das, initiated emergency peritoneal dialysis and blood transfusions with the consent of the parents.

Life-Saving Response Restores Health of Critically Ill Infant

The medical team’s swift action paid off. Over the next several days, Adrija showed signs of remarkable recovery. By May 26, she was transferred from the intensive care unit to the general pediatric ward. Her urea levels had plummeted to a safe 1 mg/dL, creatinine normalized at 0.6 mg/dL, and hemoglobin levels rose to a healthier 9.4 g/dL.

This dramatic turnaround in the health of the critically ill infant not only reflects the advanced pediatric care available at GB Pant Hospital but also highlights the importance of timely medical intervention and family cooperation.

Financial Relief Through Government Health Schemes

A major aspect of this recovery journey was the complete financial support provided under central and state-sponsored health schemes. All medical expenses for the treatment of the critically ill infant were covered under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK). This ensured that the family incurred no out-of-pocket expenses, removing a significant burden during a time of crisis.

Health Department Applauds Team for Saving Critically Ill Infant

In an official statement, the Tripura Health Department commended the efforts of the medical team at GB Pant Hospital. The department described the incident as a “remarkable instance of life-saving medical intervention,” praising the coordination between doctors, nurses, and support staff in managing the critically ill infant’s case with precision and empathy.

A Beacon of Hope for Families Across Tripura

This successful outcome not only showcases the capabilities of Tripura’s public healthcare system but also serves as a beacon of hope for other families with a critically ill infant. The story of Adrija Debnath reinforces the critical role of timely diagnosis, professional medical care, and accessible government schemes in saving young lives.
