In a significant stride towards bolstering India’s infrastructure and connectivity, the Union Cabinet has given its resounding approval to four critical Railway Multi-Tracking Projects, collectively valued at an impressive ₹11,169 crore. This monumental decision, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to revolutionize rail operations across six states, promising enhanced mobility, reduced congestion, and a substantial boost to the national economy. These Railway Multi-Tracking Projects underscore the government’s unwavering commitment to modernizing the Indian Railways network and realizing the vision of a “New India.”

Strategic Railway Multi-Tracking Projects Unveiled

The approved initiatives encompass vital routes, strategically chosen to optimize freight and passenger movement and alleviate bottlenecks in some of the busiest sections of the Indian Railways. These Railway Multi-Tracking Projects span 13 districts across the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand, collectively adding approximately 574 kilometers to the existing railway network.

The four approved Railway Multi-Tracking Projects are:

• Itarsi – Nagpur 4th Line: This project aims to significantly augment capacity on a crucial corridor, enhancing connectivity and facilitating smoother train operations between these key hubs.
• Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) – Parbhani Doubling: The doubling of this line is set to improve efficiency and reduce travel times in Maharashtra, benefiting both passenger and freight traffic.
• Aluabari Road- New Jalpaiguri 3rd and 4th Line: This expansion in West Bengal is critical for improving connectivity in the eastern region, especially for goods movement.
• Dangoaposi- Jaroli 3rd and 4th Line: These additional lines are poised to streamline the transportation of essential commodities in Odisha and Jharkhand, crucial for industrial and economic activities.

Driving Efficiency and Economic Growth Through Railway Multi-Tracking Projects

The primary objective of these Railway Multi-Tracking Projects is to dramatically increase line capacity. This enhancement is expected to:

• Improve Mobility and Operational Efficiency: By adding more tracks, trains can move more freely, reducing delays and improving overall service reliability for both passenger and freight trains.
• Alleviate Congestion: The busiest railway sections will experience significant relief from traffic congestion, leading to smoother and faster transit.
• Boost Freight Traffic: The capacity augmentation is projected to handle an additional freight traffic of a staggering 95.91 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA). These routes are vital for the transportation of a wide array of commodities including coal, cement, clinker, gypsum, fly ash, containers, agricultural products, and petroleum goods. This increased capacity will directly contribute to streamlining supply chains and accelerating economic growth.
• Reduce Logistics Costs: More efficient rail transport means lower logistics costs for industries, making Indian goods more competitive.
• Contribute to Environmental Goals: As an environment-friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, railways play a crucial role in achieving climate goals. These Railway Multi-Tracking Projects are expected to reduce oil imports by approximately 16 Crore Litres and lower CO2 emissions by a massive 515 Crore Kg, which is equivalent to planting 20 Crore trees.

Employment Generation and Community Impact

Beyond the direct operational and economic benefits, these Railway Multi-Tracking Projects are also poised to create significant employment opportunities. It is estimated that the construction phase of these projects will generate direct employment for about 229 lakh human-days, providing a much-needed boost to local economies.

Furthermore, the improved connectivity resulting from these Railway Multi-Tracking Projects will positively impact approximately 2,309 villages, benefiting around 43.60 lakh people in the regions covered by these lines. This aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) by fostering comprehensive development and enhancing employment and self-employment opportunities in these areas.

Alignment with PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan

These initiatives are a direct outcome of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, an ambitious blueprint for multi-modal connectivity. The plan emphasizes integrated planning and stakeholder consultations to ensure seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods, and services across various modes of transport.
