- Modern Infrastructure: Developed at a cost of approximately ₹450 crore, this cutting-edge terminal spans 17,340 square meters.
- Enhanced Capacity: It is designed to efficiently handle 1,350 passengers during peak hours and boasts an annual capacity of 20 lakh passengers, with future provisions to expand up to 1,800 peak hour passengers and 25 lakh annually.
- Sustainability at its Core: The terminal incorporates 100% LED lighting, energy-efficient electrical and mechanical systems, and an on-site Sewage Treatment Plant for water reuse, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental responsibility with a GRIHA-4 sustainability rating.
- Boost to Regional Connectivity: This modern facility is poised to significantly enhance regional air connectivity, catalyzing tourism, trade, and investment across southern Tamil Nadu. It will also ease travel for residents of Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari, who previously had to travel to Thiruvananthapuram for major flights.
Strengthening Road Networks: Key Highway Tuticorin Development Projects

- Sethiyathope–Cholapuram Four-Laning: The 4-laning of the 50 km Sethiyathope–Cholapuram stretch of NH-36, developed at a cost of over ₹2,350 crore under the Vikravandi–Thanjavur corridor, is a major undertaking.
- This project includes three bypasses, a 1-km four-lane bridge over the Kollidam River, four major bridges, seven flyovers, and numerous underpasses.
- It is expected to reduce travel time by a significant 45 minutes between Sethiyathope and Cholapuram, improving connectivity to the culturally rich and agriculturally vital Delta region.
- Tuticorin Port Road Six-Laning: The 6-laning of the 5.16 km NH-138 Tuticorin Port Road, built at approximately ₹200 crore, will streamline cargo flow, reduce logistics costs, and foster port-led industrial growth around V.O. Chidambaranar Port. This is a critical step towards enhancing port efficiency through these Tuticorin development projects.
Boosting Maritime Trade: Enhancing Port Infrastructure

- North Cargo Berth–III at V.O. Chidambaranar Port: This berth, developed at a cost of around ₹285 crore, has a cargo handling capacity of 6.96 MMTPA. It will cater to the increasing demand for dry bulk cargo in the region, optimizing cargo handling logistics and boosting overall port efficiency, further solidifying the impact of Tuticorin development projects.
Sustainable Rail Connectivity: Key Railway Tuticorin Development Projects

- Madurai–Bodinayakkanur Line Electrification: The electrification of the 90 km Madurai–Bodinayakkanur line will encourage eco-friendly transport and support tourism and commuting in Madurai and Theni.
- Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari Doubling: The ₹650 crore doubling of the 21 km Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari section, part of the Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari project, will strengthen crucial links between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
- Additional Doubling Projects: The doubling of the Aralvaymozhi–Nagercoil Junction (12.87 km) and Tirunelveli–Melappalayam (3.6 km) sections will significantly reduce travel time on major southern routes like Chennai–Kanyakumari, enhancing both passenger and freight capacity and regional economic integration as a result of these Tuticorin development projects.
Fortifying Energy Infrastructure: Power Transmission Project
Further solidifying the state’s power infrastructure, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a major power transmission project:
- Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) for Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant: This project, developed at a cost of around ₹550 crore, is designed for the evacuation of electricity from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 (2×1000 MW). It includes a 400 kV (quad) double-circuit transmission line from Kudankulam to the Tuticorin-II GIS substation and associated terminal equipment, ensuring robust and reliable power supply.
