In a significant endorsement of progressive governance, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently lauded Meghalaya for its exceptional performance in capital expenditure, specifically highlighting the state’s complete utilization of ₹5,400 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. Addressing a public gathering in Shillong, Sitharaman commended Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s administration for setting a benchmark in efficient financial management and tangible Meghalaya Development, distinguishing it from several other states that have struggled with similar allocations.

The Finance Minister’s praise underscores a pivotal moment for Meghalaya, emphasizing its commitment to translating allocated funds into concrete capital assets and robust infrastructure. Meghalaya’s achievement of 100% fund utilization is a testament to its strategic planning and effective implementation across various sectors. Sitharaman meticulously detailed the state’s commendable performance in critical infrastructure domains and centrally sponsored schemes. Initiatives like the Jal Jeevan Mission, aimed at providing safe and adequate drinking water to all rural households, have seen significant progress. Similarly, the PM Awas Yojana, focusing on affordable housing, and the PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, offering life insurance coverage, have been effectively rolled out, directly impacting the lives of ordinary citizens and fostering inclusive Meghalaya Development. • Digital Libraries Project: A ₹162 crore initiative aimed at establishing 750 digital libraries in rural areas. This project will revolutionize access to information and learning, empowering communities and fostering intellectual growth across the state.
• Umiam Lake Redevelopment: A ₹120.81 crore investment dedicated to transforming Umiam Lake into a premier eco-tourism hub. This initiative will not only boost tourism but also create employment opportunities and promote sustainable environmental practices, contributing to green Meghalaya Development.
• MICE and Tourism Project at Mawkhanu: A significant ₹103 crore project featuring a theme park and amphitheatre. This facility is expected to attract both domestic and international visitors, positioning Meghalaya as a vibrant destination for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions.
• Mawkhanu Football Stadium: A state-of-the-art ₹732 crore football stadium, complete with a residential academy, developed in partnership with NorthEast United FC. This project will bolster sports infrastructure, nurture young talent, and promote a culture of sports and fitness, contributing to the holistic Meghalaya Development of its youth.
• Working Women’s Hostels: An investment of ₹132 crore for the construction of working women’s hostels in Shillong, Jowai, Byrnihat, and Tura. • CBIC Office-cum-Residential Complex: A substantial ₹256.23 crore allocation for a new office-cum-residential complex for the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) in New Shillong, improving administrative efficiency and facilities.
• Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs’ Northeast Campus: A ₹100.95 crore project for establishing the Northeast Campus of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs at Mawkhanu under the PM-DevINE scheme. Promoting Local Produce and Border Area Development

Sitharaman flagged off a shipment of premium organic pineapples destined for Dubai, undertaken as part of the IFAD-supported Megha-LAMP initiative.
