Promising Leap: Tripura Sets Ambitious Target for Hybrid Rice Cultivation

In a significant stride towards agricultural self-sufficiency and farmer empowerment, the state of Tripura has announced an ambitious plan to expand hybrid rice cultivation. The government has set a target of cultivating hybrid rice on a massive 25,200 hectares of land during the 2025-26 Kharif season. This initiative, which leverages the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method, is poised to be a game-changer for the state’s agricultural sector.

The announcement was made by State Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, highlighting the government’s commitment to not only boost food grain production but also to improve the livelihoods of farmers.   • Bridging the Production-Consumption Gap: Tripura has been grappling with a food grain shortfall, a gap that has grown from 8.26 lakh metric tonnes (MT) in 2017-18 to 8.77 lakh MT in 2024-25. While production has also increased, it hasn’t kept pace with demand, resulting in a deficit of nearly 47,000 MT. The focus on Tripura hybrid rice cultivation is a direct response to this challenge.
  • The Power of the SRI Method: The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a key component of this initiative. The minister revealed that transplanting hybrid paddy seedlings within 20 days can lead to a substantial increase in yield, up to 80 kg per kani. This method, combined with hybrid varieties, promises to dramatically improve productivity.
  • Previous Success: The state has already seen encouraging results from its previous efforts. In the 2024-25 agricultural year, hybrid rice was cultivated on a total of 35,000 hectares, spread across both the Kharif and Rabi seasons.
  • Farmer Support: To ensure the success of this large-scale initiative, the government is providing financial aid and input support to farmers who adopt these hybrid varieties. This support is crucial for encouraging widespread adoption and ensuring that farmers have the resources they need to thrive.
