In a pivotal diplomatic engagement aimed at diffusing long-standing tensions, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with his Chinese counterpart, General Dong Jun, and emphasized the urgent need for effective border management and a permanent solution to border demarcation between India and China.
The high-level meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defence Ministers’ summit in Astana, Kazakhstan. The encounter marks a significant moment in the ongoing military and diplomatic dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, who have seen strained ties since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.
Constructive Dialogue Focused on Border Demarcation
During the bilateral talks, Rajnath Singh reiterated India’s commitment to preserving peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). General Dong Jun, who took office as China’s Defence Minister in late 2024, reportedly acknowledged the need for “strategic communication” and promised to continue military-level talks aimed at de-escalation. However, he refrained from offering any concrete timeline for resolution of border demarcation issues.
Chinese media, while covering the event, struck a more neutral tone, highlighting the “mutual commitment to peace” but steering clear of specific details about the contested LAC regions.
India Firm on Sovereignty and Border Clarity
Sources familiar with the meeting said Rajnath Singh made it clear that India would not compromise on its territorial sovereignty and expects all previous agreements related to border discipline and military disengagement to be honoured.
He also brought up the need for better coordination between the armed forces of both countries to prevent accidental escalations, which have often occurred due to unclear border demarcation and overlapping patrol routes.
The Indian side insists that any forward momentum in economic or multilateral cooperation must be predicated on lasting peace and clarity on the ground.

Strategic experts believe that while progress on border demarcation may still be slow, such high-level talks are essential in maintaining communication channels and reducing the risk of conflict.
For now, both sides have agreed to maintain military and diplomatic engagement and continue dialogue through Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) and Corps Commander-level meetings.
