Jammu and Kashmir witnessed turbulent weather on Friday as heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorms struck several regions, including Ramban and Srinagar. The unexpected shift in weather conditions caused significant disruption to daily life, with waterlogging, damaged crops, and traffic delays being reported across the Union Territory.

Ramban Lashed by Intense Rain and Hailstorm

In Ramban, heavy rainfall began early in the morning, intensifying by midday. The downpour, combined with a sudden hailstorm, blanketed parts of the region in ice pellets, damaging rooftops, fruit orchards, and vehicles. Locals reported the unusual intensity of the hailstorm, stating that such severe weather is rarely experienced at this time of year.

The continuous heavy rainfall led to overflowing drains and minor landslides along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Traffic was halted for hours, with authorities issuing advisories urging commuters to avoid unnecessary travel.

Srinagar Struggles with Waterlogging After Heavy Rainfall

In Srinagar, the situation was equally dire. The city was lashed by heavy rainfall throughout the day, resulting in waterlogged streets and low-lying residential areas. Commercial zones, including the busy Lal Chowk and Residency Road, reported ankle-deep water levels, slowing down daily business activities.

Residents expressed frustration over the poor drainage system, which continues to be a recurring issue during every bout of heavy rainfall. “We face this situation every year, yet no concrete steps are taken to improve drainage,” said Mohammad Iqbal, a shop owner near Dal Gate.

Authorities Swing into Action

The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority issued weather warnings earlier in the day, urging citizens to stay indoors and take precautions against possible flash floods and landslides. Emergency response teams were deployed to vulnerable areas to provide assistance.

“Given the intensity of the heavy rainfall, we have activated all our local units. We are also keeping a close watch on the river levels, especially in flood-prone zones,” a senior official said.

Damage to Agriculture and Infrastructure

The sudden heavy rainfall and hailstorm have raised concerns among the farming community. Fruit growers in the Kashmir Valley have reported significant damage to apple and cherry orchards. In Ramban, maize and vegetable crops suffered due to hailstones.

“This kind of weather, especially heavy rainfall and hail during late spring, is devastating for our crops. It’s hard to predict and harder to recover from,” said Bashir Ahmad, a local farmer in Pulwama.

Several homes in hilly areas reported minor structural damage due to hail and continuous rain. Power supply in some parts of Ramban and Srinagar was temporarily disrupted due to falling trees and damaged electric lines.

Tourists Advised Caution

The weather also impacted tourism, with popular spots witnessing fewer visitors. The Meteorological Department has urged tourists to follow advisories and avoid venturing into hilly areas prone to landslides. Many flights at Srinagar airport experienced delays, although none were canceled.

“Tourists should check weather updates before heading to outdoor locations. Safety is paramount during such heavy rainfall events,” said an official from the Tourism Department.

Weather Forecast for the Coming Days

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the Union Territory may continue to experience intermittent heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the weekend. Authorities are on high alert for any further escalation of the situation.

The department has advised farmers to delay harvesting activities and take preventive measures to minimize crop loss. Urban residents are advised to remain cautious of waterlogged roads and weakened structures.

Conclusion: Urgent Need for Better Preparedness

The recent episode of heavy rainfall and hailstorm in Jammu and Kashmir once again highlights the need for improved weather preparedness, better infrastructure, and timely communication from authorities. While the response this time was swift, residents and experts alike emphasize the importance of long-term solutions to recurring weather-related disruptions.
