A fierce political row has erupted in Tripura over Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s recent comments regarding the historical background of the Reang community. The controversy, which has put a strain on the ruling coalition, saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Janjati Morcha step forward on Thursday to mount a strong defense of the Chief Minister, while simultaneously hitting back at the widespread protests spearheaded by its own ally, the Tipra Motha Party.
The situation has escalated into a significant Tripura Reang Controversy, with the BJP’s tribal wing asserting that the Chief Minister’s statements were not only factually accurate but were also being deliberately misinterpreted for narrow political gains ahead of crucial elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The defense marks a significant juncture in the state’s political landscape, signaling rising tensions within the governing alliance.
The Janjati Morcha’s Historical Stance on the Tripura Reang Controversy
The core of the BJP Janjati Morcha’s rebuttal rests on two main arguments: the historical accuracy of Dr. Saha’s remarks and the unacceptable conduct of the protestors. The Morcha condemned what it described as targeted, personal attacks against the Chief Minister during the rallies led by Tipra Motha.
BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma was unequivocal in his support for the CM, stressing the non-partisan role of the highest office in the state. His statements, along with those of other senior leaders, provided a structured defense:
- Condemnation of Personal Attacks: The Morcha alleged that protest rallies utilized “unparliamentary language” and launched personal attacks against Dr. Saha. Debbarma highlighted the most egregious example: “In some places, protestors called the Chief Minister a person from Bangladesh, which is completely unacceptable.”
- Chief Minister Transcends Community: Debbarma firmly asserted, “A Chief Minister is beyond caste, religion, or community. He is the Chief Minister for all—Bengalis and tribals alike,” framing the CM’s comments as an objective, historical discourse rather than a divisive statement.
- Factually Correct Remarks: The Morcha maintained that Dr. Saha’s comments were “factually correct” in their historical context, underscoring that the protests were rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding or deliberate misrepresentation.

Echoing the sentiment, BJP Youth Wing Vice President and MDC Sanjib Reang further sought to clarify the context behind the Chief Minister’s remarks. The Janjati Morcha did not hold back in criticizing the leadership of Tipra Motha. They accused several of the party’s MLAs and MDCs of actively leading the protests to maximize their political mileage, suggesting a calculated move to benefit electorally from the Tripura Reang Controversy.
MDC Bimal Chakma joined the defense, taking a veiled but pointed jab at Tipra Motha’s leadership, which often evokes the historical context of the state’s Manikya dynasty. Chakma stated, “It is the national party BJP which gave due honour to the Manikya dynasty,” implying that the BJP, despite the current row, remains respectful of Tripura’s royal lineage and tribal history.
Responding directly to the warning from Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman about potentially quitting the alliance, the BJP offered a pragmatic approach while dismissing the threat. Bipin Debbarma clarified the party’s openness to dialogue, stating: “If Pradyot Debbarman has any issues, our doors are open for discussion. He can talk to the Chief Minister, state president, or central leadership. Leaving the alliance is his personal choice.”
The BJP’s firm and unified response indicates a resolved approach to handling the internal dispute, choosing to stand by the Chief Minister and the alleged historical facts over yielding to political pressure.
