Tripura CM Dr Manik Saha Announces Plans to Expand MBB University, Merge Historic MBB College
Agartala, May 29, 2025: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday unveiled a significant plan to expand the reach of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University by including three new Degree Colleges located in Ambassa, Kakraban, and Karbook under its affiliation.
Speaking at the first Convocation of MBB University at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan, Agartala, Dr. Saha also revealed that the state government is considering a proposal to merge the historic MBB College with the university. “We will require the entire MBB College premises to develop infrastructure suited for a full-fledged university and to create an ambience that reflects the identity of a varsity,” he said. “Since both the college and the university are named after Maharaja Bir Bikram, there should be no difficulty. We will thoroughly examine all aspects before taking the final decision.”
The event was graced by Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and Justice T. Amarnath Goud of the Tripura High Court.
Highlighting the academic growth of the institution, the Chief Minister informed that a total of 9,642 students, including those from three affiliated colleges, have completed their Graduate, Post-Graduate Degree, and Post-Graduate Diploma courses from MBB University. Among them, 135 high-achieving students were awarded gold medals during the ceremony.
Dr. Saha further mentioned that new academic programmes such as BBA, MBA, B.Sc, M.Sc, and M.Sc in Biotechnology are being introduced at the university to diversify its academic offerings. “The government is committed to strengthening the education system by ensuring quality teaching and better facilities,” he said. Congratulating the graduating students, he urged them to uphold respect for all.
In a special recognition, Justice T. Amarnath Goud was awarded an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Letters) by MBB University for his exceptional contributions to the judiciary.
