Tripura Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman Alleges Massive Corruption in Tripura University, Demands Action Against VC and Registrar

MLA Sudip Roy Barman Alleges Massive Corruption in Tripura University

Agartala, June 03, 2025: Tripura’s former minister And Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Tuesday wrote a scathing letter to the Union Minister for Education (MHRD) Dharmendra Pradhan leveling serious allegations of corruption and nepotism against the officiating Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain and Registrar Dr. Deepak Sharma of Tripura University.

In the letter dated June 3, 2025, Barman accused the university’s top officials of dismantling the foundational principles of meritocracy and justice through “a catastrophic saga of corruption, nepotism, and betrayal.” He alleged that the officials are “wielding their authority as instruments of tyranny,” eroding the institution’s academic integrity.

“I am shocked to learn that the officiating Vice Chancellor and Registrar have called interviews for faculty positions in the Departments of Law, Sociology, and Sanskrit, even though the VC’s term is about to end and a recruitment process for a new VC is already underway,” Barman wrote. He added that the University Grants Commission (UGC) rules do not permit such appointments by a VC nearing the end of tenure.

According to the MLA, both officials are involved in large-scale corruption in the recruitment process, appointing “under-qualified and ineligible outsiders,” including the VC’s own son, as an assistant engineer. “Only 4–5 local students were selected despite fulfilling all norms of eligibility, while more than 30 were given jobs from outside states,” Barman stated.

Raising concerns about the impact of nepotism, he wrote, “Enjoying the chair of VC and appointing his son is not a worthy choice. The issues were discussed in the State Assembly, and we were assured that a proper investigation would be made.”

Barman also highlighted allegations that jobs are being distributed to outsiders at the behest of top political bosses, claiming, “Even if we bluntly disbelieve their claims, where is the action from the Ministry of Education, PMO, Governor of Tripura and the Chief Minister?”

“The people of Tripura voted a party into power for the welfare of the state, but how can an elected government silently tolerate such corruption at the highest level of an academic institution?” he questioned.

Barman concluded the letter with a demand for immediate suspension of Prof. Prasain and Dr. Sharma. “I request you to restrain Prof. Prasain from his illegal act of recruitment and suspend him, along with the Registrar, immediately,” he urged.

He also called for a High-Level Inquiry Committee to probe into alleged irregularities, anomalies in recruitment, contract signings, and high-value purchases over the past year, calling it a matter of “public sentiment in Tripura.”

The letter was also marked to the Tripura’s Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu and Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha for urgent intervention.
