Tripura Congress Slams Government Over Deteriorating Law and Order Situation
Agartala, Tripura – The Tripura Congress protest on Wednesday turned into a fiery display of political dissent, with hundreds of party workers taking to the streets across the state. The demonstration, organized in response to increasing incidents of violence, political intimidation, and administrative inaction, directly blamed the ruling BJP-led state government for the worsening law and order situation.
The protest saw senior leaders of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) participate in large numbers, accusing the government of allowing lawlessness to fester under its watch. The rallies were held in several districts, including Agartala, where slogans were raised demanding justice for victims and the restoration of democratic space.
Congress Raises Alarm Over State-Wide Atrocities
During the Tripura Congress protest, party leaders cited numerous incidents of alleged atrocities against opposition members, civil society, and common citizens. According to the Congress, the state has witnessed a “complete breakdown” of governance, where violence and fear have replaced safety and democratic rights.
Speaking to the press, TPCC President Asish Kumar Saha declared, “Tripura has turned into a battlefield for democracy. The ruling party is using the police as a tool of suppression instead of maintaining law and order. The people are scared. The BJP government has failed.”
He added that the Congress will not remain silent while citizens continue to suffer under what he described as a “dictatorial regime.”
Multiple Districts Witness Peaceful But Strong Demonstrations
The Tripura Congress protest was not limited to the capital city. In towns like Dharmanagar, Udaipur, and Belonia, similar rallies took place where protesters held placards reading “Restore Democracy” and “End Political Violence in Tripura.”
Congress workers wore black badges and conducted silent marches as a sign of mourning for democracy. They were joined by youth wings, women’s organizations, and student unions aligned with the party.
In some areas, protestors were stopped by police and minor scuffles ensued, but no major violence was reported. However, Congress leaders alleged that the administration tried to suppress the movement by detaining several workers overnight before releasing them later without formal charges.
BJP Government Under Fire for Alleged Misgovernance
The Tripura Congress protest targeted the state administration’s repeated failure to address crimes ranging from political attacks, intimidation of opposition workers, and general public unrest. The Congress accused the BJP government of not only being complacent but actively complicit in many cases.
Congress General Secretary Pijush Biswas said, “This government’s silence on rising atrocities is deafening. They don’t even condemn attacks on opposition parties. Rule of law has collapsed.”
Many protesters claimed they were denied permission to protest peacefully in certain locations, highlighting the erosion of democratic space under the current regime.
Demand for Governor’s Intervention and Independent Inquiry
The Tripura Congress protest also demanded that the Governor of Tripura intervene in the matter and submit a detailed report to the President of India. TPCC leaders submitted a memorandum calling for an independent judicial probe into recent incidents of violence and administrative failures.
The party has also written to the Ministry of Home Affairs, seeking central intervention if the state continues to remain silent and inactive.
“Let there be a neutral investigation into the law and order crisis. If the government has nothing to hide, it should welcome scrutiny,” said Saha.
Civil Society Voices Echo Protest Concerns
The Tripura Congress protest has resonated with several civil society groups, including human rights organizations and journalists, who have raised similar concerns over the past year. Many have documented increasing threats to press freedom, suppression of dissent, and growing mistrust between the police and the people.
Reports suggest that journalists covering politically sensitive issues have been threatened or attacked, which was another point highlighted during the protest.
Political Momentum Ahead of Upcoming Elections
With local body elections nearing and the 2026 state assembly elections in sight, the Tripura Congress protest seems to be a strategic push to reinvigorate the party’s grassroots support. While the BJP continues to enjoy a strong presence, the Congress hopes that public anger over law and order issues could provide an electoral opening.
Political analysts believe the growing unrest might tilt the scales if opposition parties unite on a broader democratic platform.
Conclusion: A Cry for Democratic Restoration
The Tripura Congress protest represents more than just party politics—it echoes a broader sentiment among a section of Tripura’s population that believes justice, safety, and democracy are under threat. As public frustration mounts and opposition voices grow louder, the coming months are likely to witness intensified political activity across the state.
Whether the ruling BJP government responds with reforms or more crackdowns remains to be seen. But for now, the Congress has made its message clear—Tripura cannot continue on its current path without serious consequences.
