Tripura: Huge Crowd at Boxanagar Cattle Market Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, Prices Soar to ₹5 Lakh

Huge Crowd at Boxanagar Cattle Market

In the run-up to Eid-ul-Azha, the traditional cattle market in Boxanagar witnessed an overwhelming turnout on Monday with animal prices soaring up to ₹5 lakh. Organized in the field adjacent to Vidyajyoti Class XII School, the market drew thousands of buyers and sellers, creating a vibrant atmosphere steeped in cultural harmony.

Approximately 4,000 to 5,000 cows and goats were brought in for sale by livestock traders hailing from various parts of the state, including the Sonamura subdivision. Buyers flocked in large numbers from across Tripura, notably from the capital city, Agartala.

While prices for many high-breed cattle ranged between ₹2 to ₹3 lakh, at least one premium bull fetched a staggering ₹5 lakh, marking one of the highest transactions this season. Some sellers noted a slight dip in average prices compared to last year, but overall, market sentiment remained positive.

What set this year’s market apart was the significant participation from both Hindu and Muslim communities. Several Hindu families were also seen actively engaged in buying and selling cattle. A devotional kirtan held at the nearby Loknath temple further enhanced the spirit of communal unity, turning the market into a celebration of harmony.

Boxanagar MLA Tafajal Hossain, who visited the market along with RD Block BDO Sandip Pal, Mandal President Anil Chandra Saha and Panchayat Pradhan Bulti Sarkar Deb lauded the peaceful conduct of the event. “The biggest livestock market in Tripura is now held in Boxanagar. It is not just a market, but a symbol of tradition and harmony where Hindus and Muslims come together,” said the MLA.

He also informed that special security arrangements were put in place, with a dedicated youth team overseeing market operations under his supervision.

With Eid-ul-Azha to be celebrated on Saturday, June 7, the success of the Boxnagar cattle market set a festive tone for the coming celebrations across the state.
