Agartala, Tripura – In a significant move set to revolutionize its power distribution landscape, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has announced an ambitious target to achieve comprehensive statewide smart meter coverage by March 2027. This initiative, aiming to install approximately 6 lakh smart electricity meters across the state, represents a crucial step towards modernizing Tripura’s power infrastructure and bringing enhanced efficiency to consumers.

Biswajit Basu, the Managing Director of TSECL, recently addressed the media, shedding light on the progress and vision behind this transformative project. “As of now, 88,748 smart meters have been successfully installed across various locations in Tripura,” Basu stated, emphasizing that this is an integral part of a broader strategy to upgrade the power sector under the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme and through vital funding from the Asian Development Bank. The commitment to widespread smart meter coverage underscores a forward-thinking approach to public utility services.

The introduction of smart meters heralds a new era of transparency and convenience for electricity consumers. A standout feature is the meters’ capability to support both postpaid and prepaid billing systems, offering consumers greater flexibility in managing their electricity expenses. Furthermore, consumers will gain the power to monitor their real-time energy usage through intuitive mobile applications, fostering a sense of control and encouraging more efficient consumption habits. This real-time data access is a cornerstone of effective smart meter coverage.

Leading by Example: A Top-Down Approach to Smart Meter Coverage

To ensure smooth adoption and build public trust in this technological transition, TSECL has initiated the installation process in the residences and government quarters of ministers, MLAs, and top bureaucrats. This “top-down approach,” as described by Basu, aims to lead by example, demonstrating the reliability and advantages of smart metering technology and fostering broader acceptance across all user categories. This strategic rollout is vital for successful smart meter coverage.

The total financial outlay for this monumental project is estimated at a substantial ₹603 crore, reflecting the scale and importance TSECL places on this modernization drive.

Beyond consumer benefits, the widespread installation of smart meters promises significant improvements in the operational efficiency of the power utility. The data collected by these smart meters is automatically transmitted to the TSECL control center via cellular or Wi-Fi networks.
