In a significant stride for anti-narcotics efforts in Tripura, a Special Narcotics Court in Sonamura has delivered a powerful blow to illegal drug trafficking. On Thursday, Rafiqul Alam, a resident of Sonapur village, was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for ganja smuggling, alongside a hefty fine of Rs 1 lakh. This landmark judgment underscores the unwavering commitment of legal authorities to curb the illicit drug trade and ensure public safety.
The court’s decision, handed down by Judge Shankari Das, also stipulates an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment should the fine remain unpaid. This stern sentence serves as a clear deterrent to those involved in narcotics activities, reinforcing the serious consequences of such crimes.
A Growing Trend: Sonamura’s Firm Stance on Narcotics Conviction
This recent verdict marks the second major conviction under the anti-narcotics drive within the Sonamura subdivision in just two months, highlighting a consistent and robust approach by law enforcement. The first such ruling, delivered on May 23, 2025, saw Sharif Mia of North Kolamchoura and Subrata Das of South Kolamchoura facing similar charges and sentences. Public Prosecutor Gautam Giri confirmed that this is the second conviction by the Sonamura Special Narcotics Court in 2025, signaling an intensified crackdown on drug-related offenses.
The Case: A Narcotics Conviction Rooted in Meticulous Investigation
The case against Rafiqul Alam dates back to the night of October 4, 2024.
- Tip-Off and Interception: Acting on precise intelligence, Sub-Inspector Shivani Debbarma of Sonamura Police Station received information regarding a Tata Punch vehicle (TR-01-BZ-0653) transporting a substantial consignment of dry ganja. The vehicle was reportedly en route from Kulubari village towards the Sonamura sub-divisional town.
- Seizure and Arrest: Police swiftly intercepted the suspected vehicle near the Old Outdoor Junction. A thorough search of the car led to the seizure of a staggering 67 kilograms of dry ganja. Rafiqul Alam, who was driving the vehicle, was immediately arrested on the spot.
- Legal Proceedings Initiated: A case was promptly registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Sub-Inspector Shivani Debbarma served as the complainant in the case.
- Expeditious Investigation and Charge Sheet: Inspector Biplab Debbarma took charge of the investigation, demonstrating remarkable efficiency by submitting the charge sheet within a mere three months, specifically on December 31, 2024.
- Trial and Verdict: During the subsequent trial, testimonies from 14 witnesses were meticulously examined. The compelling evidence presented ultimately led Judge Shankari Das to pronounce Rafiqul Alam guilty of illegal drug trafficking, culminating in the significant sentence.
This successful prosecution, culminating in a rigorous narcotics conviction, is a testament to the diligent work of the Sonamura Police and the judiciary in their ongoing battle against drug abuse and trafficking. The consistent efforts ensure that justice is served and that communities are protected from the detrimental effects of illegal substances.
