Indigenous Defense Systems Crucial for Future Wars, Emphasizes DRDO Chief in Nagpur

Nagpur, May 22, 2025 — Stressing the need for self-reliance in national security, DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat asserted that indigenous defence systems will play a critical role in determining the outcome of future wars. Speaking at a key defence event in Nagpur, Dr. Kamat underscored the importance of developing home-grown military technologies to enhance India’s strategic autonomy and preparedness.

Highlighting the changing nature of warfare, Dr. Kamat pointed out that emerging threats such as cyber attacks, space-based warfare, and drone technologies demand advanced and adaptable defence solutions. “The future battlefield will not be defined by traditional confrontations. Technological superiority through indigenous innovation is the cornerstone of India’s defence strategy,” he said.

He further emphasized that India’s focus on Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in the defence sector is not just a policy initiative but a strategic imperative. According to the DRDO chief, local defence production and R&D are vital for reducing dependency on foreign technologies and ensuring operational readiness under critical circumstances.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been at the forefront of several successful projects, including missile systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and advanced radar systems. Dr. Kamat reiterated DRDO’s commitment to empowering the armed forces with cutting-edge, domestically developed technologies.

The event, attended by military officials, scientists, and defence industry leaders, also showcased a range of indigenous defence equipment developed by DRDO in collaboration with Indian industry partners.

Experts at the event echoed Dr. Kamat’s sentiments, noting that indigenous capabilities would ensure not just economic benefits but also strategic resilience against global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical volatility.

With the growing emphasis on technological self-reliance, India continues to bolster its defence ecosystem by encouraging public-private partnerships, innovation hubs, and defence startups under the Innovation for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative.

As global defence landscapes evolve, the DRDO chief’s remarks reinforce India’s vision of becoming a global leader in indigenous military technology, ensuring national security through innovation, agility, and strategic foresight.
