Kuala Lumpur, May 22, 2025 – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has described BRICS as a “cohesive force within the Global South” during his remarks at an international forum, emphasizing the growing influence of the bloc in shaping a more balanced global order. At the same time, he reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to spearheading a robust green agenda within the ASEAN region.
Speaking on the evolving geopolitical landscape, Prime Minister Anwar underlined the importance of BRICS—which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—in addressing long-standing global imbalances. He noted that the group offers a platform for emerging economies to voice their perspectives and collaborate on equitable development strategies.
“BRICS represents a cohesive force within the Global South, standing for multipolarity, mutual respect, and shared prosperity,” said Anwar. “As the world faces a convergence of economic, environmental, and geopolitical challenges, the role of BRICS has become even more critical in ensuring that the voices of developing nations are heard.”
The Malaysian leader also turned attention to regional priorities, particularly the urgent need for climate action within Southeast Asia. He pledged that Malaysia would lead efforts to integrate sustainable practices across ASEAN, focusing on renewable energy, environmental conservation, and inclusive green growth.
“Our vision for ASEAN goes beyond economic integration—it includes a deep commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility,” Anwar stated. “Malaysia is determined to lead by example, championing initiatives that will position ASEAN as a global leader in the green transition.”
The dual focus on international cooperation through BRICS and regional leadership on climate policy reflects Malaysia’s broader diplomatic strategy of aligning with emerging powers while promoting pragmatic, forward-looking initiatives.
Anwar’s statements come at a time of rising global uncertainty, with many countries in the Global South seeking alternatives to traditional power structures. His comments are likely to resonate with leaders who view BRICS as a potential counterbalance to Western-dominated institutions, while also reinforcing ASEAN’s role as a driver of sustainable development in Asia.
