Massive Boost: Tripura Tourism Drive Unveils Seven Ambitious ₹500-Crore Projects

The state of Tripura has initiated a monumental transformation in its hospitality sector, unveiling seven ambitious infrastructure projects worth over ₹500 crore. This significant financial commitment is the centerpiece of the comprehensive Tripura Tourism Drive, aimed at positioning the state as a leading destination in India’s vibrant Northeast region. The announcement, which took place during the National Conference of Tourism Ministers in Rajasthan, signals a strong resolve by the state government to harness its geographical and cultural advantages. The state is actively seeking the Central government’s support to bring this vision to fruition, ensuring that this substantial investment translates into sustainable economic growth and job creation for local communities.

This strategic push, termed the Tripura Tourism Drive, comes with a clear recognition of the state’s potential, which remained largely untapped for decades. Tourism and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted the long-standing neglect of the sector by the previous administration, noting that despite Tripura’s unique location—surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides—no meaningful effort was made to promote its natural beauty and historical sites. The Minister credited the current leadership for providing the unwavering support and guidance necessary to launch the state on its promising new trajectory since 2018.

Unprecedented Growth Fueling the Tripura Tourism Drive

The decision to accelerate the Tripura Tourism Drive is underscored by verifiable recent successes. According to a recent Ministry of Tourism report, Tripura has remarkably climbed the ranks to secure the second position in foreign tourist inflow among all Northeastern states. This achievement is a strong testament to the government’s focused strategy and the growing confidence among global and domestic travellers in Tripura as a safe, scenic, and sustainable destination.

Key growth metrics demonstrate this surge in traveller confidence:

  • Domestic Tourist Surge: Tripura witnessed a substantial 64.08% surge in domestic tourist arrivals, rising from 3.66 lakh to 6.01 lakh.
  • Foreign Visitor Growth: Foreign tourist visits increased by an impressive 36.16%, reaching 91,000 between 2023 and 2024.

These figures illustrate that the state’s appeal is rapidly expanding, necessitating the kind of large-scale infrastructure investment included in the current Tripura Tourism Drive to manage and sustain this influx.

The ₹500-Crore Tripura Tourism Drive: Seven Projects for the Future

The Secretary of Tourism, UK Chakma, detailed the state’s commitment to eco-tourism and sustainable development, a logical focus given that nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s area is forested. The plan outlines targeted development and infrastructure upgrades across the state’s most iconic sites, including the majestic Ujjayanta Palace, the floating Neermahal, the ancient rock carvings of Unakoti, the revered Tripura Sundari Temple, the scenic Chabimura, Dumboor Lake, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, and the beautiful Jampui Hills.

The core of the current plan is the list of seven major projects under the Tripura Tourism Drive:

  • Adventure and Water Park Complex: A combined adventure, eco-tourism, and water park is proposed for Sachindranagar Colony, Jirania. This facility is being modeled after successful complexes, such as Kolkata’s Nicco Park, promising a significant leisure attraction.
  • Mohanpur Adventure Park: The construction of a dedicated adventure park at Mohanpur is planned to cater to the growing demand for adventure sports and nature activities.
  • 51 Shakti Peetha Replica: A grand replica of the 51 Shakti Peethas will be developed at Bandowar, Udaipur (Gomati district). This project aims to establish a major spiritual and cultural tourism hub, drawing pilgrims from across the country.
  • Chabimura Infrastructure Upgrade: Comprehensive infrastructure development will be carried out at Chabimura, a renowned site for its stunning rock carvings.
  • Unakoti Infrastructure Upgrade: Similar infrastructure enhancements are slated for Unakoti, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its colossal rock-cut images and stone carvings.
  • Amarpur Waterfront Development: Plans include substantial waterfront development in Amarpur, focusing on leisure and scenic beauty along the water bodies.
  • Paryatan Sahayak Prakalp Launch: A tourism entrepreneurship scheme, the ‘Paryatan Sahayak Prakalp,’ will be launched to empower local stakeholders, ensuring that the economic benefits of the Tripura Tourism Drive flow directly into the local economy.

Connectivity and Strategic Outlook for the Tripura Tourism Drive

Improved connectivity is a critical element supporting the expansive Tripura Tourism Drive. The state now boasts the second-largest airport in the North East, which offers direct air links to major metropolitan cities like Delhi and Kolkata. This enhanced accessibility is a key factor enabling the projected growth in tourist numbers. The state government firmly believes that with robust Centre-state collaboration and the successful implementation of the current Tripura Tourism Drive, the state is perfectly positioned to emerge as the next major tourism success story of the North East, fulfilling its promise as a promising tourist hub.
